Different Materials Used for Shoe Covers
There are several different materials used for shoe covers, and they all have different applications. Some covers are disposable and meant to keep floors clean, while others have a lifespan of years and are designed to stand up to the harsh elements of the outdoors. Sometimes, these strong covers are necessary, but other times, the best material for your shoe cover is cheap and disposable plastic.
Polyethylene (PE)
PE is the plastic that is typically used in grocery store bags and wraps, but PE can come in two different varieties. These two versions are high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Generally speaking, these types of shoe covers are designed to be temporary and are meant to be disposed of after every use. PE shoe covers do not offer much protection from the elements, as they are simply meant to prevent people from tracking any outside dirt or grime into an indoor environment.
Difference Between HDPE and LDPE
The most significant difference between the two low-density and high-density PE materials is that HDPE is the cheaper alternative, but LDPE provides better quality. They are both relatively inexpensive options and typically come in packs of 100.
Polypropylene (PP)
PP is a plastic, like PE, but it is more durable than PE. PP types of plastics are used in eating utensils, bottle caps, and activewear. PP shoe covers are usually found in sensitive areas that need to maintain a sterile environment, such as medical facilities and laboratories.
Reusability
Unlike PE, PP shoe covers are durable enough to be cleaned and reused, and they can even have slip-resistant materials on the soles. They are a higher quality and more expensive option than PE covers.
Rubber
More durable than both PE and PP covers, rubber shoe covers are a type of heavy-duty shoe cover that can protect your shoes from harsh weather. With the rubber material also comes slip-resistant and tear-resistant qualities, giving it a far longer lifespan than plastic covers.
Weight
While rubber is a very durable material, one notable downside is that it is also a relatively heavy material. Rubber shoe covers can weigh up to a pound, which may not seem like much at first, but during harsh working conditions, the extra weight may be a hindrance.
Know What the Job Calls For
While rubber covers are some of the strongest and most durable, they are not the best material for every job site. Sometimes, an environment calls for strong protection, while other scenarios may require a more delicate and softer touch. Here we sell our own waterproof shoe covers that are disposable.
